About the Theater Company of Lafayette

Theater Company of Lafayette’s mission is to bring to Lafayette and the surrounding area a new cultural outlet; to bring the community together to produce high quality theater productions; to teach all aspects of play productions to the members of the group; and to broaden public appreciation and understanding of live theater, through innovative and imaginative programming. We’re not the average community theater…

When Theater Company Of Lafayette began in 1996, the organization was known as Lafayette Community Players.  Our company produced plays that were standard community theater choices, such as Steel Magnolias and A Christmas Carol. These productions, simply produced and well acted, found an enthusiastic audience.  In 2001, the organization began to branch out into more unusual and challenging choices, and discovered that East County audiences were eager and supportive.  Recent productions include Dead Man’s Cell Phone, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Twilight Zone Parodies.

TCL has an established, well-regarded reputation for commissioning and presenting new plays, including TheFrankenstein Experiment, which consisted of 12 short plays inspired by the famed Mary Shelley novel, and was given a Denver Post Ovation Award.  The Deep Beep-Beep:  Short Plays Inspired by Sputnik, a collaboration with the Fiske Planetarium, garnered considerable local publicity and praise, as well as a national spot on American Public Radio. Another production, G-Men in G-Strings: The J. Edgar Hoover Follies, played to sold-out houses, and has been published by Heuer Press. In all, we have produced more than 120 new plays since 2005, both short and full-length, many of which have gone on to be published and performed across the country and abroad.

Our company is a group of adults and young people who work together to bring the community high quality theatrical productions. The operations of the theater are governed by a working volunteer board of directors, and we are non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Our theater has involved more than 1,500 theater artists and entertained thousands of local residents. We usually perform in the historic Mary Miller Theater where two sometimes competing community values, preservation and innovation, find a happy marriage. Inside the former First Congregational Church, patrons find TCL productions that are entertaining, imaginative, and artistically rigorous. Our community, including our volunteers and audiences, is a diverse group that is difficult to characterize.  We consider that a good thing.

Theater Company of Lafayette fills a unique niche in Boulder County, and we are establishing ourselves as a regional center of artistic excellence and innovation.
