ABOUT THE PLAY:
Set in Margaret Thatcher’s 1980s United Kingdom, this play examines the contrast in women’s empowerment between individual achievement versus collective action. Through the story of Maureen, a successful career woman, her co-workers, her family, and notable women throughout history, this play explores those themes with humor and poignancy.
The scenes fluctuate between Maureen’s workplace (an employment agency) where she and her co-workers try to find jobs for people and Joyce’s (Maureen’s sister) home. Maureen embodies the “lean-in” style of feminism that focuses on individual success. However, Joyce argues against a flawed system and notes how it leaves people who are vulnerable (like her daughter Angie) behind and unprotected.
CAST:
All parts, except Maureen are double-cast for a total cast of 6 actors and 2-3 understudies. (Understudies will be guaranteed one performance.) Casting will be race-blind. The characters are women, but may be played by cis gender women, trans women, and femme-presenting nonbinary people.
